A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has finished a medical degree and specialised training in diagnosing and treating mental health issues. This training process usually requires ten or more years of learning, including university and specialty college training.
Child and adolescent psychiatrists must undergo an additional clinical experience in developmental psychiatry (minimum extra two years).
A psychiatrist’s training allows them to understand the complex interfaces of psychological, biological, social, and frequently spiritual elements of our lives and the origins of mental health problems.
Psychiatrists constantly attend professional development courses throughout their careers to maintain their skills and further their knowledge, particularly in young people's rapidly changing developmental pathways.
