Understanding Quetiapine: An Overview of Benefits and Risks

Quetiapine, commonly known by its brand name Seroquel, is a neuroleptic medication used to treat various mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, and sleep disorders. It is also used to regulate mood and behaviour.

Quetiapine works by blocking specific receptors in the brain, which helps to reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions. It is usually prescribed with other medications and therapies to achieve the best results. It is frequently used "as required," too.

Like with all medications, discussing any potential risks with your doctor before taking quetiapine is essential. At Voix, we usually use relatively very low doses of Seroquel/Quetiapine. Side effects are very frequently dose-related - so it is important to "adjust" any information you find online to your specific situation.

The most common side effects of quetiapine include drowsiness (usually subsides very quickly, particularly if it is started in very tiny doses), dizziness and dry mouth. There is also a possibility of weight gain (in higher doses). However, it is crucial to remember that anxiety and depression may also lead to comfortable eating and overeating - so effective treatment of these conditions, including Questiapine, could reduce the likelihood of this problem (weight gain).

All neuroleptics, particularly if used for longer periods of time in higher doses can cause changes in blood sugar levels, so it is essential to monitor your blood sugar levels if you are taking higher doses of quetiapine to prevent any endocrinological problems.

Quetiapine is generally well tolerated but can cause serious side effects in some people. We will work out the best ways of approaching this medication and titrating (working out) the dose. Please ask us if you have any questions or concerns before starting this medication.
