Starting medication

Starting medication is always uncertain and could be unsettling.

There are good reasons why the medication was started, and introducing any medication should be discussed with your clinical Team.

With most medications, there is a gradual titration schedule - gradually building up the dose to a therapeutic level, which is very individual. There is always a balance between the potential benefits of medication and the side effects.

The definition of the expected outcomes from starting the medication should be a subject of careful planning with your clinical Team. The same relates to the potential side effect.

Each medication has a different titration schedule. It depends not only on its specific type but also on your age, your specific circumstance and the other medication you may be using simultaneously.

There are no fixed titration schedules. Discrete individual processes require regular contact with your support and your clinical Team.

Do not push on with the prescribed medication, and contact your Team if you have any problems. However, seek IMMEDIATE medical support if these problems are distressing and acute.

The titration schedules are only guidelines that will be modified to your specific circumstances.
