Prescribing ADHD medication and Co-prescribing

As a part of the treatment, we must maintain consistent, six-monthly contact and comply with the regulatory requirements for your ADHD medication (psychostimulants) and ensure ongoing optimisation of your treatment.

Your regular feedback and our understanding of your evolving personal and social circumstances will allow us to reflect regularly on your specific clinical needs and supports (if required).

The WA Health Department oversees ADHD treatment with so-called Schedule 8 (S8) medications - Dexamphetamine and Ritalin-based drugs - and needs to be conducted according to the ADHD treatment guidelines.

  • All the scripts for stimulants will be provided only during the consultations.
  •  It is an excellent clinical practice and a regulatory/legal requirement.
  • For security reasons, the scripts will be provided electronically (escripts) or in printed form directly to you.
  • We are not in a position to email these scripts to the pharmacy due to safety concerns.
  • In some exceptional situations, for patients living in remote and rural areas, the local General Practitioner could offer a six-monthly follow-up ("co-prescribing").

As a prescribing psychiatrist, I must see the patient annually to ensure consistent and safe treatment. Ultimately, our medical staff retains the responsibility for all aspects of your treatment.
