Limitations and conditions for referrals

Voix offers support for young people. The definition of "young is very broad", but let's narrow it down to high school age and early adulthood - about 12 years up to early 20-ties.

This is an exhilarating but challenging time for young people, and we are trying to be with them during this journey. They are shaping their identities and lives during significant global changes affecting them and their families.

So, we have an age limitation - of 12 to 24 - and the range of conditions is pretty broad, from situational distress to neurodiversity and emerging more entrenched psychiatric conditions. We believe that with the proper support, young people can conquer their distress and reset the trajectories of their lives.

We are not set up yet for young people entrenched in drug and alcohol use. They require very specific interventions and broader specialist support. We are looking at ways of developing such services.

Young people with emerging psychotic conditions also require special care and a multidisciplinary team approach, which could be accessible through community organisations such as Early Psychosis Program at Headspace and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services. We see ourselves as complimenting them and supporting these agencies but not taking on their role.

Our major limitation is the time and availability of our clinicians!

We want to respond to and accommodate all referrals, but it may take time to enhance our services, starting with a good way of assesssing our patients' needs before we offer them practical assistance.

There is a more efficient and accessible way of doing that, and we engage our young users, their families and clinicians in working on the best way of progressing with our services. We are slowly getting there.
